Kate Garraway's 'heart sinks' daily as coronavirus affects husband in 'new and devastating ways'

Kate Garraway has said her "heart sinks every day" as she learns about "new and devastating ways" coronavirus is affecting her husband Derek Draper.

The \'Good Morning Britain\' co-host\'s significant other has been in hospital since the end of March after contracting the disease, but the TV presenter admitted she "couldn\'t be prouder" of how their children, Darcey, 14, and 10-year-old Billy, have coped over the last two months.

Sharing a video of the trio outside their home during the weekly Clap For Carers, she wrote on Instagram: "I didn\'t even know Darcey had bought this t shirt on line ( with my card !) until she emerged tonight but I do know how grateful she is to the #nhs - I couldn\'t be prouder of how she & Billy have coped with these past 2 horrific months for our family - always finding ways of lifting our spirits & staying strong even when they can see me wobbling . Its so wonderful to see little green shoots of hope that this dreadful disease is easing and that hopefully soon we might all be able to see each other again and hug our nearest and dearest. But the journey for me and my family seems to be far from over as everyday my heart sinks as I learn new & devastating ways this virus has more battles for Derek to fight. But he is still HERE & so there is still hope. (sic)"

The 53-year-old star thanked fans for their heartfelt messages, and insisted people will need to "stick together far beyond the end of lockdown" because the "physical and mental scars" of coronavirus will "run deep".

She added: "My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who will be affected by this, not just for the next few weeks but for the foreseeable future. That will be the case for many who have suffered from the disease, but also the front line workers who have been helping to treat the worst affected. Reflecting on the story of Jo, a woman who came close to death while battling the virus herself, Kate\'s \'GMB\' co-host Piers Morgan said: "One of our colleagues, Kate Garraway, her husband\'s been very critically ill now for a long period of time.

"These sort of stories, I have to say, I think give Kate huge hope when she hears them and sees them, because you know she\'s been in this very position that Clive [Jo\'s husband] was in where you can\'t see your loved one - you have to just muddle through, I guess."
