Zendaya made history once again. The actress from the distinguished HBO series Max, Euphoria, made history on Monday by winning Best Actress in a Drama Series at the Emmy Awards ceremony. On the other hand, South Korea's Lee Jung-Jae took home the award for Best Actor in a Drama Series for the Netflix series, Squid Games. In fact, both series were the television phenomena of the year.
At just 26 years old, Zendaya became the youngest actress to win Best Actress twice, while Lee Jung-Jae was crowned the first actor to win the awards with a role in a language other than English.
"Thank you for believing in me, even when I don't," said the young actress as she accepted the award in front of fellow nominees Jodie Comer, Laura Linney, Melanie Lynskey, Sandra Oh and Reese Witherspoon. Zendaya, who in 'Euphoria' plays a high school student with a serious drug addiction, thus, won for the second time the award she already achieved in 2020 for the first season of the series. She then became the youngest actress to win the Emmy for best dramatic performance.
The star of another mass phenomenon, in this case from Netflix, took the stage minutes later to collect the Emmy for starring in 'Squid Game'. Jung-Jae, who until a year ago was a complete unknown to the English-speaking industry, beat out other names like Jason Bateman, Brian Cox and others at the Emmy Awards on Monday. "Thank you for bringing a realistic problem we all face to life on screen with a great script and incredible visual effects," the actor said after addressing the series' director, Hwang Dong-Hyuk.
