Poor Things, the latest film by Yorgos Lanthimos, looks increasingly disturbing and strange. With an atypical aesthetic for the filmmaker's usual work, the film is the director's first foray into the realm of more colorful fantasy. A condition that is fully appreciated in the latest trailer released by Searchight Pictures.
Mixing black and white sequences and vibrant colorful scenes, the teaser presents Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), the scientific experiment of the deformed Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), who among other creations has already played with different species, gestated, for example, a duck with the body of a dog. However, Bella seems to be the most ambitious result of his career. Every day, the character played by the Oscar winner learns something new, feeling more and more comfortable in her new resurrected body. Everything changes when she meets Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a lawyer who wants to show her the wonders of the world. Based on Alasdair Grey's novel, Poor Things is a modernization of Frankenstein's story under a clear feminist perspective, since, as its official synopsis states, Bella will become firm in her purpose of "defending equality and liberation".
The trailer also serves to offer a first look at the character of Max McCandess (Ramy Youssef), a man who travels to meet Bella and better understand her story, as well as Harry Astley (Jerrod Carmichael). Christopher Abbot, Kathryn Hunter, Margaret Qualley, Wayne Brett and Suzy Bemba round out the cast. At the same time as the release of the promotional material, Searchight Pictures has shown the latest official poster for the production.
This is the second collaboration between the Greek director and the actress, who already worked together in The Favourite. Poor Things will hit theaters on September 8, 2023.
