Aang's journey to master the four elements comes to Netflix in live-action format. As this isn't the first attempt to bring the well-remembered characters from Avatar: The Legend of Aang (Avatar: The Last Airbender) out of the 2D format and bring them to life with flesh-and-blood actors, fans of the original have justifiable doubts as to how well the adaptation might work. During TUDUM, Netflix's 2023 convention, the first glimpse of the main faces of the series being prepared by the N giant was revealed.
Gordon Cormier plays Aang, the Avatar, a 12-year-old free-spirited airbender who awakens after being frozen in ice for a century. His mission is to bring peace to the land that is threatened by the Fire Nation. Kiawentiio Tarbell will bring to life Katara, a waterbender sister of Sokka. Their mother was killed by the Fire Nation and despite her tragedy, she chooses to join Aang on his mission.
Ian Ousley (Thirteen Reasons Why) takes on the role of Sokka, Katara's older brother. Although he does not possess his sister's magical qualities, he is skilled with the boomerang. He is also part of the expedition led by Aang as they train in the mastery of the elements. Finally, Dallas Liu becomes the villain of the story. He is Zuko, the exiled crown prince of the Fire Nation. His mission is to capture the Avatar in order to regain his honor and his father's approval.
Gordon Cormier, the youngest of the four actors, said "I'm a fan of the series and I'm also excited just like you are," said the new Aang to cheers from the audience. Avatar: The Legend of Aang will have eight episodes and will arrive on Netflix in 2024.
