The current Hollywood screenwriters' strike has turned many productions upside down and has left the future of many others up in the air, such as season 2 of The Sandman, the Netflix series whose creator, Neil Gaiman, is participating in the writers' strike. Gaiman himself recently stated that he did not want "scab scripts" with respect to the production of the new season after a fan asked him fearful that Netflix might continue the series with scripts from writers who are not part of the strike.
These statements made it clear that the production of The Sandman season 2 would not be delayed until the writers' strike was called off. However, as reported by The Hollywood Handle, it seems that Netflix has started shooting The Sandman season 2 despite the fact that its creator is participating in the writers' strike.
Shortly after the beginning of the writers' strike, Neil Gaiman made it clear that the production of the new episodes of The Sandman would depend on the development of the writers' strike, so it was obvious that season 2 would come later.
"Whether or not The Sandman begins filming depends on how long the strike lasts. And there will be no scab scripts in the series," Gaiman declared. But the fact that Netflix has started shooting The Sandman can only mean two things: either the platform will only shoot those episodes that have already developed their scripts (if any) or it has finally resorted to scabs to develop the new chapters. If the latter is the case, it could trigger certain discrepancies between Neil Gaiman and Netflix, jeopardizing the future of The Sandman with regard to the development of more seasons on the platform.
