Conditioned by the actors' strike and the difficult situation in the industry, the San Diego Comic-Con 2023 has not been one of the great editions of the event in terms of news, far from it. However, James Gunn's new DC has been responsible for stoking the fire with the announcement of the upcoming adaptation of some of his best stories. Announced at the convention itself and later on Twitter, DC Studios confirms the development of an animated Watchmen movie for 2024. The future film will offer the opportunity to revisit the beloved characters and the story's complex narrative with the creative possibilities presented by today's animation.
Created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, Watchmen will have its first animated film adaptation, adding to the graphic novel's history of adaptations and influence on the comic book industry. In fact, the film will arrive 15 years after the premiere of the project directed by Zack Snyder. While Moore denies any adaptation of Watchmen, the upcoming film promises to honor the work of its creators while proposing a new version of the material that respects the comic book narrative. The new DC Studios film is set to continue the legacy of the acclaimed graphic novel.
In addition, DC will also make an animated movie of 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' which will also hit theaters in 2024. At the moment it is unknown if the adaptations will be literal adaptations of the original material or if they will present variations in their narrative. 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' already had a live-action adaptation within the well-known Arrowverse of The CW in a story that developed throughout series such as Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman.
