Despite numerous filming photos and alleged plot leaks circulating on-line, there is still a lot of secrecy surrounding Sony Pictures' Madame Web' movie, and no official announcement has beed madd about the Marvel Comics characters who will appear in the next project based on the Spider-man universe. We only know that Dakota Johnson is playing a version of the title character. However Sydney Sweeney co-starring in the film has finally confirmed which character she is playing in the movie.
Although there have been rumors, a statement from the actress to Variety has madd them official, when the actress talked about her character Julia Carpenter (in the comics she becomes Spider-Woman): "I was freaking out, of course," Sweeney recalls. "I went straight to the comic book store and bought every comic book that mentioned my character. I think it's different than what people expect a superhero movie to be. Quote that! That's a quote, because the tabloids will pick up everything else we talk about."
Sweeney then admitted that she hopes to have an expanded role in Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future, before coyly hinting that a possible Spider-Woman standalone film could happen (it remains to be seen if that's the project Olivia Wilde is currently developing).
In the comics, Julia Carpenter became the second Madame Web after after Sarah and Ana Kravinoff killed the original, Cassandra Webb. She eventually took on the mantle of Spider-Woman, we don't know for sure if Sweeney will actually suit up in this film of the character. Anecdotally some eagle-eyed fans may have recognized Julia Carpenter / Spider-woman as one of the wall-crawlers from the Spider-Society in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
