Queer romantic narratives have found a solid place in cinema and Red, White & Royal Blue stands as a testament to this advancement. Inspired by Casey McQuiston's best-selling novel, this Amazon Prime Video film, directed by Matthew Lopez (Inheritance), artfully intertwines romance, diplomacy and personal authenticity. In fact, e xpectations generated by critical acclaim on Rotten Tomatoes underscore its potential to resonate with audiences.
"The dirty little secret of this film is that it's basically fan art. I love the book too much and I want the viewers of the film to get to the end of the story and feel the same way the readers felt at the culmination of the original text: with a lot of sweetness, kindness, love and sincerity, which is ultimately what attracted me to the project," Lopez said for Buzzfeed.
In the film, the story follows Alex (Taylor Zakhar Perez), son of the President of the United States, and Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), the Crown Prince of England, who find themselves embroiled in a media scandal that threatens the diplomatic stability of both nations. They must establish a strategic relationship in the public eye, which will gradually turn into a rather secret and passionate bond that will defy the norms imposed by their public roles.
In addition, Poramy Nicholson said for The New York Times: "It sounds like fan fiction, and it looks it, too. Yet, as with any romance worth its salt, the director gets us to root for the transition from sassy pair of rivals to bedfellows. He is supported, of course, by cinematographer Stephen Goldblatt, who portrays the leads with such adoration, you almost expect them to turn to the camera and promote a bottle of perfume."
In fact, Red, White & Royal Blue is now on streaming.
