Nathan Fielder, Benny Safdie (Oppenheimer) and award-winning Emma Stone (La La Land) reunite in a unique fictional TV project. The Curse is a series co-produced by A24 and Showtime in which Stone and Fielder himself play a newlywed couple who are apparently victims of a curse.
In fact, the creators tell the story in an ingenious way, "twisting genres" by employing a meta-audiovisual narrative. The first preview gives an account of this style that inserts a television genre within fiction. Husband and wife Whitney and Asher host a home renovation show called Flipanthropy, a popular format in which they give decorating and construction advice. In addition, Dougie (Safdie), a man with secrets is the producer os the show. An apparent curse, which gives the series its name, "strikes a blow" to the relationship of the main couple based in Espanola, New Mexico, who were looking forward to having a child.
In fact, The Curse marks Emma Stone's return to television, five years after The Maniac (2018), a hard-hitting sci-fi drama created by Patrick Somerville. This year, the actress also presents one of her biggest film projects. Poor Creatures, a film by Yorgos Lanthimos, won the Leon d'Or at Venice and critics widely praised Stone's performance and her transformation into Bella Baxter. The cast also includes Barkhad Abdi, Corbin Bernsen and Constance Shulman.
On the other hand, everyone knows Nathan Fielder (co-creator, co-producer and director) for his experimental proposals such as programs that mix reality and fiction. Situated on the border of documentary and reality show, they are programs that play with the viewer's curiosity, the sense of humor of their protagonist and "the magic of television".
The Curse will hit streaming on November 10 in the U.S.
