Troll premiered worldwide on Netflix last year and quickly became the most watched non-English language film of all time. According to numbers provided by the platform, director Roar Uthaug's action-adventure story managed to break into the Top 10 in 93 countries, achieving a record 103,000,000 views in its first 91 days.
With these figures it was clear that there was still much to explore within that universe and a new Variety exclusive has just confirmed the development of a sequel. Tentatively titled Troll 2, the project will bring back the director of the first film who already has strong titles in his filmography such as The Wave (Norway's first disaster movie) and Tomb Raider with Alicia Vikander.
In addition to Uthaug, screenwriter Espen Aukan and producers Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud are also part to the new Troll universe. While details about the plot are still scarce, Horn and Sinkerud, assured that the second installment will again revolve around a fairy tale figure from their country, while being acted, directed and produced by Norwegian talent.
The film "Troll" is based on a Norse legend that tells the story of how an explosion in the mountains causes an ancient troll to awaken. To prevent it from bringing the case to town, the police appoint an intrepid paleontologist. So far, the story has achieved a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes and many fans have compared the character in the story to Godzilla, thus declaring it to be a Nordic Godzilla.
According to the announcement, Troll 2 fans think that the filming will began in 2024, but an estimated arrival date to Netflix's catalog is unknown.
