Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed the development of a sequel to the action film, Samaritan, starring Sylvester Stallone. The news comes after the success of the first installment, which premiered exclusively on Prime Video on August 26, 2022 and remained the number one film on the streaming service for three consecutive weeks. So, after hanging up the Rocky gloves and becoming a superhero for the first time, Stallone reprises this unique character in his filmography.
Screenwriter Bragi F. Schut, who also wrote the first installment, has been hired to pen the script for the sequel. Stallone will not only reprise his starring role, but will also return as producer along with his Balboa Productions partner Braden Aftergood. Schut will also serve as executive producer along with Adam Rosenberg.
The first part, directed by Julius Avery, tells the story of a young boy who is rescued from a beating by a sanitation worker. The boy comes to believe that the older man is a superhero who disappeared 20 years ago after an epic battle with his archenemies. The feature film opened in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide and exceeded performance expectations for Amazon.
In the denouement of the first installment, Joe, who is actually Nemesis and not Samaritan as believed, confronts Cyrus, a crime lord intent on plunging Granite City into chaos. Joe, dealing with guilt and regret over his brother's death, takes up his mantle to stop Cyrus' plans. In a final battle at a burning power plant, Joe defeats Cyrus and saves Sam. This act allows him to find redemption.
On the other hand, the artist will be the focus of an upcoming documentary titled Sly, which will premiere on Netflix on November 3.
