After a season in Sicily, The White Lotus series changes location for its third installment: Thailand. The comedy-drama, one of HBO's most acclaimed, will take a little more time to reach the big screen (premiere projections will now be in 2025), but there are quite ambitious plans for the development of the story. So said creator Mike White in recent statements to Entertainment Weekly. Expectations are growing around the project, whose next season promises to be "longer, bigger and crazier", according to White. Although the writers' and actors' strike put a temporary halt to production, the head of the show was optimistic and told the U.S. magazine that he is finalizing the scripts in the hope of starting shooting early next year.
"I don't know what people will think, but I'm super excited. At least by my own standards, I'm very satisfied about the content of the season," the filmmaker added. The success of the previous batches set a high standard for the series. Social criticism, a hallmark element of The White Lotus, will remain a mainstay of the narrative while a new backdrop of a trip to Thailand, and a focus on Eastern spirituality, will be an extention.
"The first season focuses on money, the second season on sex and I think the third season could be a satirical and funny look at perceptions of death in Eastern religions (…), it seems to me that could be a rich tapestry for another round in The White Lotus," the writer and director had previewed in an HBO Max promotional content, following the end of the second installment.
Although The White Lotus is originally a limited series, its potential led to the series now having more seasons.
