The most successful filmmaker in history, James Cameron, is gearing up for the release of Avatar 3, scheduled for December 19, 2025. In a recent interview with People magazine, he revealed new details about the progress of the franchise and his vision for future films. As he confirmed, the third installment is "on track." "We've already done the motion capture and the live-action photography as part of an intermingled production [with Avatar: The Way of Water], and we even wrapped up part of the fourth feature, because in that production all of our young characters are going to have a big time jump," he added.
These timelines will be six years apart and will form part of the plot through flashbacks, so the film was shot simultaneously to ensure continuity in the age of the cast. "The part where we go back is the part we haven't shot yet. So we will start with it when the third film is ready." In fact, Producer Jon Landau, announced to Empire magazine that the third installment will introduce one more antagonistic race to Na'vi, known as the Ash People. Oona Chaplin will play the leader of this volcanic race, known for her role as Talisa Maegyr in Game of Thrones.
Meanwhile, Cameron confirmed the return of Kate Winslet in her role as Ronal, Tonowari's wife, who lived with a couple of shamans to master the techniques she will use in the sequel.
Avatar 4 will debut on December 21, 2029, while Avatar 5 would arrive on December 19, 2031. The entire series, spanning more than two decades since the first release, promises to be a complete cinematic journey.
