Calculating, ambitious and unstable, this is how The Regime introduces us to Kate Winslet. The Oscar winner returns to HBO to star in this new series with a particular satirical look at political power told through a story that promises to combine drama with dark humor. The premiere is scheduled for March 3, 2024, a long-awaited date for the star's return after acclaimed performances in previous productions such as Mildred Pierce and Mare of Easttown.
The plot spans a fictional modern period where the European regime is beginning to crumble. Winslet plays a British chancellor dealing with loneliness and paranoia at the pinnacle of power, from where she will lead a diplomatic confrontation against the United States. She also shows a relationship of dependence and trust that she establishes with her bodyguard Corporal Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a man with no personal identity who turns out to be her only ally.
The recent teaser offers images where the actress flashes her cool and elegant nature in front of the public and the cameras, although behind the walls she uses her subordinates as an instrument to express her anger and frustration. "You're here because you're a nobody," Winslet's character tells Schoenaerts. "You're a nobody, so I can trust you," she adds. Written by Will Tracy, known for his work in The Menu and Succession, "the fiction narrates a year inside the palace walls", according to the official synopsis. Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs are the filmmakers this time. In fact, the others actores part of the production are Hugh Grant, Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough and Martha Plimpton.
With six official episodes, the premiere of The Regime will arrive on March 3.
