"A hero is just a good person who has run out of options," is how the trailer for the second season of Tokyo Vice begins. The TV drama set in the Japanese capital of the 1990s, portrays the affront between a journalist against the crimes of the yakuza organization. Based on the true story of reporter Jake Adelstein, this is the first major Hollywood series has ever done entirely in the Asian country, which fascinated Japanese viewers for its unusual cultural authenticity, as well as Western viewers through the HBO Max platform.
In its sequel, the acclaimed fiction will delve even deeper into the complex criminal world, after a season finale loaded with suspense -and countless cliffhangers-. "We had the blessing of the production company [Fifth Season] to end that way. I was writing the sequel while we were shooting the original, so we're following the same plot. Everything that was left hanging will be resolved, if not immediately, over the course of the episodes," showrunner J.T. Rogers told Entertainment Weekly (EW) in a joint interview with director/producer Alan Poul.
The official teaser reveals the health condition of Sato (Show Kasamatsu), a member of the Chihara-Kai gang who was on the verge of death but seems to have survived the attack. "We underestimated the level of viewers' attachment to Sato. Just the possibility of him passing away elicited a strong emotional response," Rogers mentioned to Vulture. However, his return will test his commitment to the band and his relationship with Samantha, two stages of his life that he was already weary of at the time of his attack.
While the first season of Tokyo Vice is already on HBO Max, the second season will arrive on February 8.
