This week, the new Disney+ series was officially renewed for a second season after reaching more than 110 million hours of viewing globally. In other words, it was one of the most watched titles on the streaming service. Bod Iger CEO of The Walt Disney Company, was in charge of announcing the return of the series at the Q1 FY2024 earnings conference.
As season 1 adapts The Lightning Thief, season 2 will adapt The Sea of Monsters. In this second novel, Percy and his friends embark on another epic quest to recover the mythical Golden Fleece and restore the Tree of Thalia that protects Camp Half-Blood. In addition to including more older mythological stories, the second novel also introduces branching stories that the series could accommodate. Not only could it focus on Percy, but also on Grover's quest to find Pan.
Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, expressed excitement to continue exploring the Percy Jackson universe alongside Rick Riordan, 20th Television and the outstanding creative team and cast responsible for bringing this story to the screen. Riordan shared his excitement, "I can't wait to bring the second season of Percy Jackson to Disney+. Anchors aweigh. Hoist the mainsail. All hands on deck, demigods - we're heading out to the sea of monsters!"
Walker Scobell will return to the title role of Percy Jackson along with Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood as they form the trio of lead characters. The only cast member unable to return is veteran Lance Reddick, who brings Zeus to life and passed away in 2023.
