True Detective has just finished its fourth season, titled Night Country. For the first time, Nic Pizzolatto was not in charge of writing it; the responsibility fell to Issa Lopez. Controversies aside, the acclaimed series has managed to attract audiences once again. Millions of viewers sat on their sofas for six weeks to follow a sinister mystery set in the small town of Ennis, Alaska.
The fourth installment has worked extraordinarily well and, in addition to dazzling most critics, has signed exceptional audience numbers. So much so that it has even surpassed the legendary first season. Compared to the 11.9 million viewers on average that the Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey installment had, True Detective: Night Country has climbed to 12.7 million viewers between HBO and the Max platform.
Therefore, the company has not hesitated to give the green light to the renewal. True Detective will have a fifth season. And Lopez will return to serve as showrunner after the good results obtained. "Issa Lopez is a unique and rare talent that speaks directly to HBO's creative spirit. She directed True Detective: Polar Night from start to finish, never once failing to deliver on her commendable vision and inspiring us with her resilience both on paper and behind the scenes," said Francesca Orsi, HBO's executive vice president of programming and head of HBO's film and drama series department.
"From conception to premiere, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life," Lopez acknowledged for her part. "HBO trusted my vision every step of the way, and the idea of bringing a new incarnation of True Detective to life with Casey [Bloys, HBO's president of programming], Francesca and the entire team is a dream come true."
