After headlining one of last year's top-grossing films, Margot Robbie will once again embark on another playable world: that of The Sims. A new report confirmed that the actress and producer's company, LuckyChap, is developing a live-action movie inspired by the hit video game franchise. Kate Herron, who was in charge of directing the first season of Marvel Studios' Loki, will be writing the film adaptation along with Briony Redman, a screenwriter who previously collaborated with her on an episode of Doctor Who. Herron will also direct.
Although the launch of this Sims movie comes at a time when a flurry of video game-inspired adaptations have been confirmed, the idea of bringing the property to the big screen had been under evaluation since 2007.
Initially, 20th Century Fox owned the rights and Brian Lynch of The Minions had written a script for a version with real actors. However, after Disney bought Fox, the project did not continue. The Sims movie, which will feature Margot Robbie as one of its producers, does not yet have a studio partner.
The Sims grew out of Will Wright's SimCity game in 1989. Since 2000, the franchise has allowed players the opportunity to create virtual avatars and explore various aspects of their lives. This includes managing basic needs such as hunger and hygiene, developing careers, building relationships and designing homes. The game offers an environment where the only limit is often the player's imagination.
For the moment, in the absence of plot details, the fact that the title is in the hands of Robbie and Herron are good indications. As a producer, Robbie was behind the Oscar-winning I, Tonya and even the provocative Saltburn.
