The sequel to Freaky Friday is now official, and it's not a false alarm. It all started when Jamie Lee Curtis shared via Instagram a picture with Lindsay Lohan, something that obviously caught our attention, but it didn't happen until The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Disney approved the sequel, something that had been rumored since 2022.
In fact, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan had already talked about having ideas for a sequel, but were waiting for the mouse house to finally decide. And now it is official that Nisha Ganatra will be the director of the film. Most of the people know her for the movie The High Note and also worked directing a couple of episodes of Welcome to Chippendales, which is a Hulu series, so the Disney connection is already there. After the announcement, Jamie Lee Curtis re-uploaded a picture of a frame from the 2003 film with a little green dove, indicating that finally the dream of many is going to come true.
Freaky Friday had a budget of approximately $26 million dollars at the time and grossed $160 million. It became a juvenile and children's classic, and logically now it is going to have the bar set pretty high because there have been countless adaptations. In fact, there is also a remake by Disney that passed without success.
However, there have been many other productions about it, such as Family Switch, which you can watch on Netflix, starring Jennifer Garner and involving a whole family, and there have also been a few other versions. The only ones who will officially return to the film are Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. As for the rest of the cast, there is no news.
