The world of Batman is about to get even bigger as Max unveiled a first trailer for The Penguin, the first live-action series spin-off from the events of The Batman (2022), a film starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Matt Reeves. The production will once again star Oscar nominee Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot. The material revealed today corresponds to the first complete audiovisual, after Max previewed just a few frames in 2023. It sets the dark tone of the series and focuses on a story of the title character recalling a mythical gangster from his childhood, while we can see parallel images depicting his own rise to power.
While plot details for The Penguin are unknown at this time, but fans expect that his story will take place after the events of The Batman and explore some of the criminal underworld laid out in the film. "Colin exploded off-screen as the Penguin in 'The Batman,' and to have the opportunity to explore that character's inner life in depth on HBO Max is an absolute thrill," said Matt Reeves who will also serve as producer of this spin-off.
"We are thrilled to bring audiences a new take on this iconic DC character that they've never seen before," said Sarah Aubrey, Max's Chief Content Officer when the series was announced. "It's incredible to work with Matt, Dylan and Lauren on the continuation of this story and to see Colin take his already exceptional performance on 'The Batman' to the next level."
Craig Zobel, who was behind the HBO show Mare of Easttown, is directing three episodes out of a total of eight that the series will have.
The Penguin is coming to Max in the fall of this year.
