Star Wars continues to expand in all directions, but especially in the television realm. After the release of the latest season of The Bad Batch, the next series to arrive on Disney+ will be The Acolyte, a live-action production that will be, for many viewers, the first contact with the High Republic. The good news? Not only did it become known that it will have a double-episode premiere, also, there's now an official trailer.
The Acolyte was described as a thriller set some 100 years before the events of Episode I: The Phantom Menace, in a supposedly peaceful era reigned by the Jedi and where the Sith are believed to be long extinct. The plot follows in the footsteps of a Padawan as she meets with her master to investigate a series of crimes. However, everything will take a dark turn when they discover that the forces they face are more sinister than they imagine.
"We're exploring the political, personal and spiritual things that came up in a period of time that we don't know a lot about," explained series creator Leslye Headland. "My question in watching The Phantom Menace was always, 'How did things get to this point?' How did we get to a point where a Sith lord can infiltrate the Senate and none of the Jedi realize it? What went wrong? What are the scenarios that led us to this moment?" she acknowledged.
In addition to Headland, who previously served as showrunner for Russian Doll, the series features a stellar cast. In fact, this includes Amandla Stenberg (Bodies, Bodies, Bodies), Lee Jung-jae (The Squid Game), Dafne Keen (Logan), Jodie Turner-Smith (Sex Education) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Matrix).
The Acolyte will debut next June 4 on Disney+.
