In 1979, the iconic Mad Max saga made its first appearance, with a young Mel Gibson as the protagonist, exploring a dystopian world within the action genre. However, in 2015, George Miller revived this franchise with Mad Max: Fury Road, starring Tom Hardy (Venom) as the reclusive Max Rockatansky. Now, the saga is preparing to add another installment to its repertoire with Furiosa, a spin-off that will delve into the character's origin.
This project, directed by Miller, will be a prequel that follows the story of a young Furiosa, whose character was first seen in Fury Road with Charlize Theron (Atomic Blonde). However, this time around, Theron will not return to the project, and instead, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen's Gambit) will take on the lead role.
In a recent interview, the director explained why he opted not to use technology to rejuvenate Theron, a growing trend in the film industry. Miller looked at examples such as Ang Lee's Project Gemini Man and Martin Scorsese's The Irishman, and concluded that he didn't want the audience's attention to be into the visual effects rather than the narrative: "The only thing you'd be looking at is, 'Look how well the technology works?' It wouldn't have been compelling to me."
The filmmaker highlighted Taylor-Joy's qualities for the role, noting her determination and thoroughness, as well as her training as a ballet dancer, similar to Theron. Miller believes the actress will bring the necessary precision to the character of Furiosa.
The plot takes place after the big Collapse, with the young girl being snatched from the Green Place of Mothers and falling into the hands of a strange gang led by the villain Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Love and Thunder).
