For two seasons Euphoria has been the series to watch. It has swept the ratings, garnered rave reviews, and catapulted its lead actors to stardom. However, as the second season drew to a close, some cracks began to show. The fact that Sam Levinson as showrunner had fostered a toxic atmosphere on the set (full of improvisations and marathon days) was the first indication that something was not right with this youthful series, as well as Levinson's difficult temperament.
The latter would soon blow up, with the disaster of The Idol. However, it didn't have to affect Euphoria's brand, and HBO kept its plans for a third season… which its future is not clear at all. Until, a few days ago, it was official what fans had feared: the company had decided to give it a break, and officially delayed Euphoria's third season. "HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to delivering an exceptional third season. In the meantime, we will allow our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities," we read in an official statement.
In addition, HBO said it has fully released the cast of the series for the rest of the year, and that they will reconvene in October with solid plans to begin filming in 2025. Many ideas have been explored for the future of the series and all have been discarded, like Rue being relegated to a supporting role. She would also become a detective for some reason, and in another version she would be a surrogate mother. These puzzling twists prove the mess that HBO is in right now regarding the direction of Euphoria, and that in the best case scenario would lead to the third season consisting of six episodes, and not the eight announced, if it exists at all.
