After delighting us in the horror genre, John Krasinski will make a 180° turn in his career as a director with a family film titled 'IF'. A live-action/CGI hybrid about a world where all sorts of imaginary creatures roam, and only a little girl can see them. Titled IF (short for Imaginary Friends), the film revolves around a young girl who develops the ability to see everyone's imaginary friends, most of whom are created by people when they were little and then forgotten. Here we follow her as she embarks on a magical adventure to reconnect all people with her children's imaginary friends.
During CinemaCon 2023, Krasinski described Imaginary Friends (IF) as his attempt to make something as timeless as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). Moreover, he told Collider that he also wanted to create a film that his children Hazel and Violet could enjoy.
'IF' is the third feature film as John Krasinski, following A Quiet Place (2018) and A Quiet Place: Part 2 (2020). In addition to directing, the Boston-based filmmaker acts, wrote the screenplay and produced this family story through his company Sunday Night, along with his leading man Ryan Reynolds and his company Maximum Effort. Also credited as producers are Allyson Seeger and Andrew Form.
The story stars Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Cailey Fleming (Star Wars: The Force Awakens). The others actors part of the 'human' cast are Louis Gossett Jr. (Challenge to Destiny), Alan Kim (Minari), Liza Colón-Zayas (The Bear) and Fiona Shaw (Enola Holmes).
For the imaginary creatures, the director called on a multi-star cast to provide the voices: Steve Carell (The Office), Matt Damon (Mission Rescue), Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), among others.
IF, John Krasinski's third film, hits theaters on May 17.
