While many films pass through theaters before landing in the Disney+ catalog, there are certain titles that, for one reason or another, end up directly on the streaming platform. Lately, however, it seems that the streaming service is backing off and deciding to try its luck by bringing some titles released directly in its catalog to the big screen, such as Pixar's Soul. But this time we are not dealing with a movie already released, but with one that is about to premiere on the platform this year and that Disney+ has just confirmed its change of plans with it: Young Woman and the Sea, the new feature film starring Daisy Ridley, an actress well known for her role as Rey in Star Wars who we will soon see in a new film in the franchise.
As reported by Comicbook, Disney has decided to release Young Woman and the Sea in theaters for a limited time due to the good results obtained in its test screenings. The film will hit theaters in the United States starting May 31, 2024.
Under the direction of Joachim Rønning, Young Woman and the Sea is a biographical drama that tells the story of Trudy Ederle, who in 1926 was the first woman to swim across the English Channel. Daisy Ridley plays Gertrude "Trudy" Ederle, an American champion swimmer who first won a gold medal at the 1924 Olympic Games. In 1926, Ederle became the first woman to swim 21 miles across the English Channel.
The film's cast is rounded out by Stephen Graham, Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Kim Bodnia, Jeanette Hain, Ethan Rouse, Sava Dragunchev, Robert Eades and the debut of Doc Butler and Yordan Angelov.
