Greta Gerwig, the director whose name has become synonymous with success following the release of Barbie, is now on the threshold of embarking on a journey into the vast and magical lands of Narnia. Deadline revealed fascinating details about what will be her next project, a new adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix, confirming her as one of the most sought-after and visionary directors in the film industry today.
The Narnia saga is reinvented under the direction of Greta Gerwig on Netflix, representing a risky bet for the platform. The deal with the CS Lewis Company marks a milestone, committing Gerwig to direct at least two films in the franchise. Matthew Aldrich, co-writer of Coco, will oversee creative development, backed by prominent producers including Mark Gordon, Douglas Gresham and Vincent Sieber.
Greta Gerwig expressed, "I'm a little terrified because I really have a lot of reverence for Narnia. I loved the Narnia universe so much as a child. As an adult, I've discovered that C.S. Lewis is a great thinker and a great writer. I feel intimidated doing this. It's something worthy of intimidation."
During an interview, Netflix Film director Scott Stuber revealed enthusiasm for the project, confirming that The Gerwig-directed Chronicles of Narnia will be one of the most anticipated productions of the coming year.
With the Barbie frenzy coming to an end, Gerwig will travel to London to resume pre-production on The Chronicles of Narnia. However, fans of the iconic fantasy series will have to be patient. Planned timelines suggest that filming would not begin until August 2024, which could mean that the new adaptation won't hit screens until 2026.
