In a year full of horror films like Abigail, Alien: Romulus and Nosferatu, the production company NEON is betting on a very striking marketing campaign for Longlegs, its next bet within the genre. While major studios use their trailers to introduce their stars or surprise with explicit horror moments, the trailers for this film starring Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe, usually leave us with more questions than answers about what to expect from the project.
As the film written and directed by Oz Perkins (Gretel & Hansel) nears its theatrical release date, a new clip immerses us in the mysterious universe in which Cage plays a serial killer like no other. Like the previous videos, this teaser doesn't reveal any details of the story, but is accompanied by some images that hint at the presence of supernatural elements.
While many specific details regarding Longlegs ' plot remain a mystery, it has been announced that the film takes its main inspiration from classic Hollywood psychological thrillers. In the film, Maika Monroe would play FBI agent Lee Harker, a new recruit assigned to a cold case involving an elusive serial killer. As the investigation progresses, Harker will discover a personal connection to the criminal, something that will push her to work against the clock in order to save more lives.
With projects like Possessor, Titane and, most recently, Immaculate which became the company's best of debut, NEON has proven to have a solid track record in disturbing and unconventional films. As such, we can assume that Longlegs will encompass much more than the portrayal of an average killer.
Longlegs, Cage and Monroe 's new film will hit theaters in the United States on July 12.
