Despite its release being pushed back to 2025, the next film from obscure director Bong Joon Ho (Parasites) has already caused a stir with an exclusive trailer that was unveiled at the recent edition of CinemaCon, the annual convention held in Las Vegas. Robert Pattinson is the star that the South Korean director chose for Mickey 17, the sci-fi project where the protagonist faces more than a dozen clones of himself.
"It's a story of a conventional man, who ends up saving the world in the end," described the Oscar winner about his provocative feature film. The film is based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton; however, the title (reflecting the number of times the central character dies) is now different due to the filmmaker. "I've killed it 10 more times," Bong advanced through an interpreter. "I'm happy that we can show this teaser on a big screen and not on cell phones," he added.
Film critics and specialists present have given positive comments on the film, although all agree that the proposal is quite strange. According to Variety, Pattinson's character applies for a job as a "throwaway" in a human expedition sent to colonize an ice planet. The company secretary explains: "Once you die, we print a new version of your body with most of your memories intact.
The trailer shows the multiple clones that will emerge, and the brutal dangers in which the protagonist loses his life: from having his hand severe to being in liquid metal. This project is Bong Joon Ho 's first feature film after the runaway success of Parasites in 2019. That film won four Oscars, including wins in the Best Picture and Best Director categories.
