Earlier this month, Russell Crowe, best known for his role in Gladiator (2000), said there was a strong possibility of a return to horror films as a sequel to The Pope's Exorcist was in discussion. But while we wait for firmer news on that project, the Oscar winner already has a date for his next confrontation with evil.
According to a recent report, Vertical has acquired North American distribution rights to an upcoming film starring Crowe titled The Exorcism. This film, formerly known as The Georgetown Project, has also secured its release date and streaming arrival after years in the shadows. The film directed by Joshua John Miller, screenwriter of The Final Girls (2015), was announced in 2019 and consummated its shooting at the end of that same year. However, the film remained shelved for quite some time. The recent change in its title probably has to do with taking advantage of the popularity of The Pope's Exorcism, the horror by Russell Crowe in 2023, which received mixed reviews, but was accompanied by financial success.
The Exorcism is a film with meta elements that follows Anthony Miller (Crowe), a troubled actor who begins to destabilize while filming a supernatural horror movie. His estranged daughter wonders if he is returning to his past addictions or if there is something more sinister at play. Crowe's new film, which also stars Sam Worthington (Avatar) and Adam Goldberg, will hit theaters in the United States on June 7. It will then join the catalog of Shudder, the exclusive horror streaming service. There is no doubt that this next film will be just as scary as 'The Pope's Exorcism'.
