Legendary Pictures has officially confirmed that the sequel to 'Godzilla X Kong' is in the works, and they have hired Dave Callaham, known for his work with Marvel, to write the script. Callaham, whose experience includes co-writing 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' and 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse', thus returns to his roots in the Monsterverse.
The news comes on the heels of the film's remarkable box office success, which has grossed nearly $555 million worldwide, far exceeding its $135 million production budget. This achievement has placed the film as one of the most profitable in the franchise, which has included five films to date, with this being the lowest budget.
Dave Callaham has an interesting track record in the Monsterverse, having been the first screenwriter to work on the film 'Godzilla (2014)'. Although he retained a story credit, his original script went through several revisions by other notable writers such as David S. Goyer, Frank Darabont, Tony Gilroy and Max Borenstein, with the latter ultimately receiving screenplay credit. Borenstein continued to influence the development of the franchise, writing the story for 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' and co-writing 'Godzilla vs. Kong'.
While no other writer has yet been confirmed to return, nor has the deal for 'Godzilla x Kong' director Adam Wingard to return been finalized, the hiring of Callaham suggests an interesting direction for the sequel. It is not yet clear whether Callaham will work from an original proposal as in the 2014 film or develop a concept from Wingard. However, Callaham's ability to handle diverse narrative tones, demonstrated in his work from the intense action of 'Mortal Kombat' to the fantasy adventure of 'Shang-Chi', bodes well for an exciting evolution for the Monsterverse.
