In early 2023 at TUDUM, Netflix's special fan event, Chris Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave announced that a third 'Extraction' movie was in early development. However, since then, a lot has happened in the industry including the double strike of screenwriters and actors that brought a lot of production to a standstill.
Now that the conflict is over, producer and screenwriter Joe Russo (Avengers: Endgame, 2019) provided an update on the status of the Hemsworth-starring film. In a recent interview, the filmmaker stated that they are currently writing the action film's script and figuring out the project's production schedule. "Yes, we're developing it right now, figuring out Chris' schedule. Sam Hargrave is returning to direct," Joe Russo said.
"It's an interesting franchise because it's a very emotionally wounded character, so I think there's a good narrative with respect to his history and, you know, his relationship with violence is based on self-hatred and guilt. I think it adds a lot of texture, which allows us to tell more stories about him," he added.
Directed by Sam Hargrave and written by Joe Russo, 'Extraction' was available on Netflix as of April 2020. Based on the graphic novel by Andre Parks, the film featured Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a black market mercenary and former SASR operator, recruited by his partner to rescue a man in Bangladesh. A sequel was out in June last year with the return of Hargrave, Russo and Hemsworth, and including Idris Elba to the cast.
In fact, each of them should return for 'Extraction 3', the film that will complete the action trilogy. As Russo indicates the new installment does not yet have a shooting date or release window.
