Romance novel adaptations seem to be the new specialty of the streaming service Prime Video, as they currently enjoy the success of The Idea of You and announced a long-awaited sequel. Red, White & Royal Blue, based on the 2019 book of the same name by Casey McQuiston, will have a second movie and is now official. The first film, starring Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine, centered on the son of the first female president of the United States who on a trip to the United Kingdom has an altercation with a British prince. Alex and Henry begin to pretend to be friends to avoid a diplomatic crisis, but the truce sparks a romance between them.
As expected, mainly because the original novel was a New York Times bestselling rage in 2019, the movie was a complete success within Prime Video's catalog. On its debut day it reached the top of the Top 10 and went viral on social media upon its release in August 2023. Inevitably, the sequel was just around the corner. According to a statement from MGM Studios, Nicholas Galitzine will return as Prince Henry in the sequel to Red, White and Royal Blue. So will Taylor Zakhar Perez in the role of Alex Claremont-Diaz. The director of the first installment, Matthew Lopez, will also return to write the screenplay along with author Casey McQuiston.
Plot details are being under wraps, but we know that the first film ended with Alex and Henry going public with their relationship. In the sequel we could expect to see more of their romance, despite the disapproval of the British royal family and their new challenges. Official details are awaited, such as the start of filming and a first synopsis.
