Terminator has become one of the biggest and most relevant science fiction franchises on the big screen. With more than four decades of history, its rich universe has been explored with film sequels, comics, novels, video games and series. Now, Netflix will bring us a new production of this dystopian saga in animated format entitled Terminator Zero.
Mattson Tomlin (Project Power, 2020) created and produced the project, which was titled “Terminators: The Anime series' when it was first announced. According to the news, its plot will respect the franchise's canon, but will focus on new characters from the universe created by James Cameron. At the same time, it will take up several elements of the horror genre present in the original 1984 film.
“There's a completely valid version of the Terminator franchise where Terminator is synonymous with Jason and Freddy, where it's this relentless serial killer, there's a little bit of Friday the 13th in here. There's a little bit of Michael Myers,” Tomlin previewed about Terminator Zero.
In Terminator Zero the story will follow a soldier from the future who travels to 1997 to change the fate of humanity. His mission? To protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who is working to launch a new AI system designed to compete with Skynet. But as Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, a ruthless assassin from the future who forever alters the fate of his three children will persued him.
In addition to a first look at Terminator Zero, Netflix revealed that the anime will land on the platform next August 29, 2024. The eight episodes of this new entry to the franchise will be available on that date worldwide.
