The Last of Us is one of the most successful series of recent times, so the details of the second season have all fans in suspense. Although HBO and Sony Pictures TV are keeping the information under lock and key, today we know how many episodes it will have. In an interview with Deadline, series creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann revealed that the second season of The Last of Us will have seven episodes. That means it will be shorter than the first season, though there's a reason for that. According to Mazin, the story was so big that they had to rethink how they would tell it over several seasons.
“The story material we got from Part II of the game is so much more than the material that was in the first game,” the showrunner stated. “When you do that, you look for natural breaking points and, as we presented it, this season, the national breaking point seemed to come after seven episodes.”
In response to fan fears about the length of the second season of The Last of Us, Craig Mazin clarified that this decision is due to the fact that there is a lot of material and it is necessary to distribute it to tell it in the best way. “The story we're telling is much bigger than the story of season 1, there's just a lot more going on,” he said. “It's a lot harder to produce, but, to be honest, we want each episode to feel like its own blockbuster.” Along these lines, Mazin confirmed that one of the episodes in the second season will be quite long.
The second season of The Last of Us will premiere in early 2025.
