A24 has released the trailer for its new film A Different Man, a dark comedy starring Sebastian Stan, who won Best Actor at the recent Berlin Film Festival for his role in this feature film. The story follows an aspiring actor with neurofibromatosis, a genetic disease that causes tumors to grow on his skin and bones. Desperate to change his appearance, Edward undergoes facial reconstructive surgery that drastically changes his life.
The film also features Adam Pearson, a real-life performer who suffers from neurofibromatosis and has worked on films such as Under the Skin and Chained for Life. In fact, Pearson plays Oswald, an actor who takes on the role of Edward in a play based on his life. In addition, the cast is rounded out by C. Mason Wells, Owen Kline and Renate Reinsve. Also, the latter actress and Pearson teamed up to co-write the script, which promises to be a profound reflection on identity and perception.
During the feature film's premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Stan shared his unique experiences preparing for this challenging role. “I interacted with people and it was really interesting,” said Stan, referring to his walks around New York in prosthetic makeup. He also added, “It was a little scary to see how limited the interaction is between two extremes: not addressing the problem or overcompensating. The only people who were more honest were the children. I had this interaction with a little girl, and her mother was trying to do the right thing, but by doing the right thing she was actually preventing the child from simply having an experience."
A Different Man hit theaters on September 20.
