British actor Theo James, currently leading Netflix's action series, The Gentleman, is going to lead the cast of The Hole, a horror film directed by acclaimed filmmaker Kim Jee-woon (I Saw the Devil). The screenplay, penned by Christopher Chen, is based on Hye-young Pyun’s 2017 Shirley Jackson Award-winning novel of the same name. Esmail Corp, K Period Media, and Anthology Studios are producing the film, with The Veterans handling international sales rights. In addition, the announcement for the project will take place at the American Film Market next week. CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group are co-representing U.S. rights.
In The Hole, Theo James portrays Owen, a successful professor residing in South Korea. After a devastating car accident kills Owen's wife, Sandy. The accident leaves Owen bedridden, forcing him to rely on the care of his Korean mother-in-law, Yuna. As Yuna delves deeper into the disturbing truth about Owen and Sandy's marriage, and Owen's true nature, his path to recovery becomes increasingly perilous. The film will be a bilingual production, incorporating both English and Korean dialogue. Moreover, the story unfolds across both countries, with filming taking place in the U.S. and in Korea as well.
As for the lead part, Theo James is an Emmy Award nominee for his role in HBO’s The White Lotus. He recently stars in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen for Netflix and also he is also working in Stephen King’s The Monkey, under the direction of Osgood Perkins for Neon. Aditionally, James is best known for playing Tobias “Four” Eaton in the Divergent film trilogy and is currently in production on David MacKenzie’s Fuze alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Sam Worthington.
