Renowned British cellist Julian Lloyd Webber has revealed he is battling prostate cancer.
The musician, who celebrated his 75th birthday on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, intentionally kept his diagnosis a secret to ensure he did not disappoint fans during his milestone celebration.
The news follows his triumphant return to the stage at London’s Wigmore Hall after a 12-year absence from public performance.
In a personal statement, Lloyd Webber explained his decision to withhold the information, saying, "I did not want to let anyone down so I kept my diagnosis secret until after my birthday concert."
He noted that he now needs to begin treatment as soon as possible but remains optimistic about his prognosis.
He shared that he feels encouraged by his medical team’s expectations and fully intends to make a complete recovery.
The diagnosis comes just as Lloyd Webber had successfully navigated a long road back to performing.
He originally stepped away from the concert platform in 2014 due to a severe herniated disc in his neck, an injury caused by decades of the repeated bowing action required to play the cello.
The injury was so debilitating at the time that he famously sold his Stradivarius cello, believing his career as a performer had ended permanently.
However, after years of recovery, he recently began practicing again, starting with simple scales before building up the stamina for full pieces.
His 75th birthday gala was not only a celebration of his life but a testament to his resilience in overcoming physical injury.
Despite the new health challenge, the cellist stated he does not intend to cancel his upcoming engagements and will focus on his treatment moving forward.
