What: Disaster (2015, Sky 12)

Who: Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Emily Watson, Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Jake Gyllenhaal

Directed by Baltasar Korm\u225\'5fkur

Jason Clarke leads an impressive ensemble cast in Baltasar Korm\u225\'5fkur's true-life disaster thriller.

He plays mountain guide Rob Hall, the straight-laced head honcho at commercial tour company Adventure Consultants. His job is to safely escort thrill-seeking tourists to the top of the world's tallest peak and then - rather crucially - get them back down again in one piece. It's 1996 when we meet him and he's got years of experience under his belt, but there's a sense that things are starting to get out of hand.

Rival tour companies keep springing up, base camp is an overcrowded mess and a seamless ascent is getting harder and harder to guarantee. Add to that the fact there's little you can do when the elements decide not play ball and fears start to mount for Rob's latest crew of amateur climbers. Chief among them are Josh Brolin's tough Texan, Japanese businesswoman Naoko Mori and mailman John Hawkes.

Korm\u225\'5fkur (Contraband, 2 Guns) steers clear of sentimentality and instead goes for grim realism, but a lack of character depth leaves things feeling a little flat. Still, the expedition is impressively realised and Emily Watson is excellent as the base controller struggling to keep a lid on the escalating chaos.

Sky Cinema on demand and Sky Cinema Premiere from Friday 15 July
