Matt Lucas has taken over as Fagin in the West End production of Oliver! at London’s Gielgud Theatre
The comedian is performing the role for six weeks while Simon Lipkin takes paternity leave, with Lucas scheduled to appear until 1 November
The musical has also adopted a gentler approach to Fagin for family audiences
A key scene involving Oliver discovering his hidden treasure has been toned down, replacing the character’s furious reaction with a stern warning and presenting him as more of a lovable rogue.
