Daisy May Cooper has revealed that ITV’s rejection of *This Country* left her and her brother Charlie Cooper facing serious financial trouble

The siblings had written the comedy while working night-cleaning jobs and eventually secured an ITV pilot, but the broadcaster and production company abandoned the project

A restrictive contract meant reclaiming the rights would have cost around £300,000

Cooper then approached the BBC directly with their scripts and footage

The broadcaster commissioned the series, which ran for three acclaimed seasons and earned her a Bafta for comedy performance.
