Ashley Walters is drawing on a turbulent past for his directorial debut, *Animol*
The film follows young offenders confronting gang loyalties, violence and relationships inside a young offenders institution
Walters, who spent 18 months in custody after a firearms conviction, later rebuilt his career through acting and music, including a spell with So Solid Crew
He also overcame a 15-year struggle with alcohol addiction and has spoken about seeking professional help and support from his family
After starring in *Top Boy* and *Adolescence*, he now hopes *Animol* offers an honest look at masculinity, pressure and redemption.
