Spurred by the discovery of lost manuscripts of Cicero, the Florentines of the 14th and 15th centuries found in the ancient Roman Republic a political soul mate. A Latin literary revival sparked a revival of ancient architecture and statuary, and of ancient Greek philosophy and literature.
The revival was thwarted by the rise of the Medici family to power in Florence. A lecture by W. J. Neidinger.
