L27. By refusing to verify the efficacy of indulgences, Martin Luther earned both the ire and admiration of influential churchmen and statesmen.

He began to question other Church practices: clerical celibacy, Papal infallibility, the sacraments, the merits of the saints. The Reformation had started. Others went further in their reform of Roman Christianity and the Reformation turned violent.
