As Romans lost increasingly more of their freedoms and liberties to the Imperial government, there was a noticeable shift in the art and architecture of the Empire, from the free-spirited Hellenic enthusiasm under Hadrian, to the rigid, almost militarism of Diocletian. The lecture examines Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli, Diocletian's Villa at Split, and the Arch of Constantine in Rome.
