In 2011, Art Review named him the world's most influential and expensive living artist. Gerhard Richter, born in Dresden in 1932, grew up in the GDR and fled to the West shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
His work ranges from photo-based images to gigantic abstractions and installations. Gerald Fox met him in Cologne while he was preparing for a new series of paintings.
