Lecture 16. Medieval Monasticism. From the sands of Egypt and Syria Christian monasticism spread to the Orthodox and Catholic worlds.

The churches eventually came to tame the monastic movement, to bring it under closer and tighter control of the Church hierarchy, imposing rule upon it.

It would be these new monasteries that preserved the ancient classics and brought the faith to barbarian nations.
