Bougival Junction is a French colony in the American West where the inhabitants resolutely retain their national character and way of life.

The Sarrazin family, four brothers led by their matriarchal sister-in-law, Maria (Claudia Cardinale), lead their own lives in the town until another family of five step-sisters arrive led by Louise (Brigitte Bardot).
