Hayley Squires plays leading British pornstar Jolene Dollar, in Lucy Kirkwood’s new drama Adult Material. Juggling on-set glamour and motherhood at home, Jolene is a poster girl for the industry. But her happy world is shaken when Jolene learns that a dark figure from her past, American porn legend Tom Pain, is coming to the UK to collaborate with her oldest colleague and close friend Carroll. Her uneasiness grows as she meets newbie Amy, and learns what extremes she has been pushed to on her first day on set. Back at home, daughter Phoebe gets into a difficult situation with her boyfriend and Jolene offers some catastrophic advice.
Following the events of Carroll’s party, Jolene and Carroll do their best to control the fall-out, as Tom is taken to hospital, and Amy to the police station. Jolene vows to help Amy and invites her into her family home – a decision that doesn’t go down well with the rest of the family. Meanwhile, Jolene’s kids are having problems of their own: Phoebe’s forced to face the music when the school discover what she has done to Paulie, and Gabriel is given information that destroys his world. As Jolene embarks on a daunting crusade to get justice for Amy, she is thrust into the mainstream public eye as she never has before, with calamitous results for her friendships, family and career.
Nine months later, Jolene’s exit from porn has turned her life upside down. Poorer, angrier, lonelier, she is at the sharp end of the gig economy, and her nest is virtually empty. As the trial against Hazewire looms, disgraced MP Stella Maitland offers a lifeline when she volunteers to defend her in court. They pursue the lost footage from Amy’s shoot in the hope it could win the case for them. As Jolene strives to keep the remnants of her broken home together, a trip to the doctor reveals the hidden reality of her lifestyle.
Jolene’s day in court arrives and she is finally forced to confront her own secrets, as Stella goes head to head with the Hazewire team. Carroll attempts to salvage their friendship as loyalties are ruptured. Meanwhile, when the lost tape goes public, Amy is forced to start escorting. Following the trial judgement, Jolene makes a terrible sacrifice to save her family from ruin, but slowly starts to salvage herself from the ruins of the past year.
