When Charmian meets Ronnie Biggs on a train, it is love at first sight. Despite her family's work to keep the two apart, Charmian and Ronnie run away together. When the couple struggles to get by, they turn to charming Bruce Reynolds for a loan.
Charmian must raise her young family alone after Ronnie's imprisonment.
With Ronnie in prison, Charmian begins an affair with Ruby Wright's son, Alan. But when the unexpected happens, and Ronnie breaks out of prison, Charmian tries to reunite her family.
Having changed their names and all the money from the robbery gone, Ronnie and Charmian relocate to Melbourne and get jobs. But when Ronnie's picture shows up in a Melbourne magazine, he must go into hiding.
Using the money from the Packer deal, Charmian is able to buy herself a home for herself and the boys, but she still desperately misses Ronnie. Ronnie barely scrapes by in a suburb in Rio de Janeiro; to make some money he tries to sell his life story to a journalist.
