It is the year 2020. Back in 2002, the Nemesis Comet destroyed the Earth's humans and animals. The few that survived live in the underground research facility of North Col. One of the residents, Noah Daniels, is gifted in many ways, but it is his fascination with the holodeck which proves to be costly. One night, Noah ignores his suspension from the holodeck to use it. Suddenly, Noah starts it up and lands in Haven.
After being captured by a group of Nomads, Noah is still trying to figure out how far back into the past he is. The Nomads are a small band of youths who are pursued by an older group called the Protectors, led by Tao. The Protectors capture Nomads and force them to mine Thunderstone. A sensing device, the Sentinel, is Tao's newest weapon for tracking down the Nomads. Back in North Col, Noah's family try to discover what has happened to him.
After being captured by the Nomad Sundance, Noah comes face-to-face with the Protector Sutch, Sundance's twin brother. Back at North Col, Dr. Pretorius and Becky are trying to re-trace what Noah did in order to find him and bring him back.
Tao has plans for the truck known as The Beast, which is found by the Protectors in Hollow Mountain. The Nomads are still trying to reach the safety of the mountains via the Deep Road.
Arushka and Noah sneak into the Protector mines in order to save Sundance, whom they are convinced has been captured. Back in North Col, Noah's mother Liz has a look around the Holodeck.
After finding themselves outside a circus in the year 1999, Noah searches for a power source while Arushka is fascinated by the animals. In North Col, Becky theorizes that Noah may have traveled in time.
